Updating the menu bar

Sometimes you’ll want to add a menu item linked to a new page you’ve created. Or perhaps you want to remove a menu item or move them around.

If your WordPress theme allows you to update your menus using the built-in Menus feature (found under “Appearance”), here’s an easy guide for how you can update your WordPress menu yourself.

NB – By default, ‘Editor level’ users do not automatically get access to the options below. You might need to contact your web designer/administrator if the options are not available to you.

Adding new items

First, ensure you’ve created your new page, completed the content and published it. Then to add a menu item so users can visit your new page…

  1. Go to Appearance > Menus
If your website uses more than one menu, select the menu you want to work with from the dropdown menu at the top.
  2. Locate the pane entitled Pages.

The WordPress Pages pane (menu customisation)

  1. Within this pane, select the View All link to bring up a list of all the currently published pages.
  2. Select the pages you want to add by clicking the checkbox next to each page’s title.
  3. Click the Add to Menu button located at the bottom of this pane to add them. Your new menu items are added at the very bottom of the menu, under ‘Menu Structure’ (you might have to scroll down to see them).
  4. You’ll very likely to want to move the new items to a more appropriate location in the menu. To move your newly added items, under Menu Structure, simply drag them upwards (and/or downwards) to the required location.
